CAF unveils a striking new trophy for CHAN 2024 as East Africa prepares to host, with record prize money and group stage matchups confirmed.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled a redesigned trophy for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), ahead of what is set to be the tournament’s most significant edition yet.

The updated design, revealed as part of a broader rebranding campaign, features a combination of gold and silver finishes.

It includes 54 engraved lines encircling a central map of Africa a visual representation of the continent’s football unity and the participation of all CAF member nations.

According to CAF, the new trophy symbolises the values of unity, identity, and progress that the championship stands for.

It will be awarded at the conclusion of the CHAN 2024 tournament, which takes place from 2 to 30 August and will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

This marks the first time the competition will be held across three nations, with the final scheduled for Kenya, the third-place match in Uganda, and the opening fixture to be played in Tanzania.

CAF has also announced a record total prize pool of $10.4 million for this year’s tournament the highest in CHAN history.

Winners – $3.5 million

Runners-up – $1.2 million

Third Place – $700,000

Fourth Place – $600,000

Quarter-finalists – $450,000 each

Third in Group Stage – $300,000 each

Fourth or fifth in Group Stage – $200,000 each

The increased funding is part of CAF’s wider efforts to enhance the status of continental competitions and provide greater support to participating teams.

A total of 19 national teams will compete in CHAN 2024, divided into four groups. Each group will be based in one of the host countries, with the top teams advancing to the knockout rounds.

Group A (Kenya): Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Zambia

Group B (Tanzania): Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic

Group C (Uganda):Uganda, Niger, Guinea, Algeria, South Africa

Group D: Senegal, Nigeria, Sudan, Congo

Group D, the only four-team group, includes defending champions Senegal and former finalists Nigeria, making it one of the most anticipated groups in the competition.

CHAN 2024 is reserved for players active in their respective national leagues and serves as a key platform to highlight domestic football talent across the continent.

This year’s edition is also seen as a trial run for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by the same three East African nations.
