MC Alger fans turn on technical team, vandalise stadium seats after Rangers defeat

MC Alger’s travelling supporters brought colour and passion to Abeokuta, but their team’s 2–0 defeat to Rangers ended in ugly scenes as fans confronted the technical team and damaged stadium seats.

MC Alger’s impressive travelling support turned into an unwelcome talking point on Sunday as angry fans stormed towards the touchline to protest against their team’s technical crew and vandalised stadium seats following a 2-0 defeat to Rangers International in Abeokuta.

The ugly scenes unfolded at the MKO Abiola Stadium after the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie, with sections of the Algerian supporters expressing their frustration at the result and their team’s performance.

TheAthleticNG was present in Abeokuta and witnessed the disorder that followed the final whistle, as the visitors’ supporters turned their anger towards their own technical team.

The scenes were a disappointing conclusion to what had otherwise been an impressive show of support from the travelling Algerians.

Close to a thousand supporters, by the on-ground estimate, had made the journey to Nigeria, with many travelling by air to back MC Alger in their continental assignment.

Their numbers, energy and commitment added colour to the occasion and underlined the passion that African club football can inspire across borders.

Such dedication deserves recognition. Travelling significant distances to support a team away from home is part of what makes football special, particularly in continental competitions where supporters help bring a different atmosphere to the host city.

However, the disorder that followed the defeat cast a shadow over that commitment.

Sections of the visiting contingent damaged stadium chairs, leaving property at the venue vandalised. Their confrontation with the technical team also raised concerns about the conduct of supporters when results fail to meet expectations.

Passion and disappointment are part of football, but neither justifies damaging public infrastructure or directing hostility towards a team’s coaching staff. Supporters have every right to demand better performances from their club, but protests must remain peaceful.

The incident came after a difficult evening for MC Alger, who had initially been handed a numerical advantage when Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh was sent off just after the 11th minute.

Despite losing their first choice goalkeeper early, the Nigerian champions reorganised and remained competitive before MC Alger defender Benhaoua was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the second half.

With both teams reduced to 10 men, Rangers gradually took control. A penalty converted by Kenneth Igboke broke the deadlock before James Emo struck late to secure a 2-0 victory for the hosts.

The result gives Rangers a valuable advantage ahead of the return leg in Algeria, scheduled for October 23, but the scenes in Abeokuta have added another dimension to the tie beyond the football itself.

Attention will now turn to the arrangements for the second leg, particularly the safety of both teams, their officials and supporters. Any formal disciplinary response to the incidents will depend on the relevant match reports and decisions by the appropriate authorities.
