Afrobasket 2025: Nigeria eye knockout berth with Tunisia clash

Nigeria’s D’Tigers face defending champions Tunisia at Afrobasket 2025 in Luanda, knowing victory will secure a place in the quarter-finals.

Nigeria’s D’Tigers will aim to seal a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 FIBA Afrobasket when they face defending champions Tunisia in their second Group B match in Luanda, Angola.

The Nigerians made a strong start to the tournament, easing past Madagascar 77-59 in their opener, while Tunisia were stunned 86-65 by Cameroon.

Força Lleida point guard Caleb Agada scored 22 points in 22 minutes while Stan Okoye added 13 points, Ike Nwamu 12, and Kaodirichi Akobundu 10 for Nigeria.

Victory over the North Africans would see D’Tigers progress with a game to spare, while defeat would leave them battling for second spot or relying on one of the best third-place finishes.

Tunisia, champions in three of the last five editions and chasing a historic three-peat, still boast significant quality.

Shooting guard Jawhar Jawadi, guard Omar Abada and 6ft 10in center Mohamed Fares Ochi will be key threats for the defending champions.

Head coach Ogoh Odaudu is expected to rely on Nigeria’s high-tempo offence and physical defence to unsettle the Tunisians. The team’s transition play and perimeter shooting were pivotal in their opening win.

Tip-off at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Luanda is scheduled for 14:30 GMT, with D’Tigers aiming to keep their unbeaten run intact and send a strong message to other title contenders.

The D’Tigers, AfroBasket champions in 2015 and four-time silver medallists (1997, 1999, 2003, 2017), also boast three bronze medals (1995, 2005, 2011), underlining their pedigree as one of Africa’s basketball powerhouses
