Morocco make history with maiden U20 World Cup triumph over Argentina

Morocco made history by defeating Argentina 2-0 to win the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile their first-ever title at any FIFA tournament.

Two first-half goals from Yassir Zabiri secured a famous victory for coach Mohamed Ouahbi’s side at Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago.

The result saw Morocco become only the second African nation to win the competition, after Ghana’s triumph in 2009.

The match began at a high tempo, with both teams showing attacking intent. Morocco struck first in the 12th minute when Zabiri was fouled on the edge of the area by Argentine goalkeeper Santino Barbi.

Following a VAR review, Barbi received a yellow card, and Zabiri converted the resulting free-kick with a curling finish into the top corner.

Argentina attempted to respond quickly, but Morocco’s organised defending kept them at bay. On 29 minutes, Ismael Baouf won possession in midfield and released Othmane Maamma, whose cross found Zabiri to double the lead.

Argentina created chances through Mateo Silvetti and Gianluca Prestianni, but Morocco’s goalkeeper Ibrahim Gomis produced several key saves to preserve the advantage.
