Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has rejected claims that his television analysis of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener against Tanzania was unsupportive.
Oliseh came under scrutiny on social media after Nigeria’s 2–1 victory in their Group C match at the AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco, with some fans accusing him of focusing excessively on shortcomings despite the win.
The former Nigeria captain, who was part of the broadcast analysis team, said the reaction misunderstood both his role as a pundit and his long-standing commitment to Nigerian football.
Nigeria secured all three points in their opening fixture, but Oliseh’s commentary and assessment sparked debate online, particularly on X, formerly Twitter.
Some supporters felt the analysis was overly critical at a time when the team is under intense pressure to perform, while others questioned whether the comments showed sufficient backing for head coach Eric Chelle and his players.

The criticism intensified in the hours following the match, prompting Oliseh to issue a public response.
In a statement, Oliseh said suggestions that his analysis reflected a lack of support for the Super Eagles were both hurtful and inaccurate.
“I am deeply saddened by the recent suggestions on social media that my analysis of the Super Eagles’ performance against Tanzania stems from a lack of support for the team,” he said.
“For nearly 40 years, I have dedicated my life and career to the progress of Nigerian football. While my professional duty requires impartiality and objective critique, my heart remains firmly with the players and Coach Eric Chelle.”

Oliseh added that honest assessment should not be mistaken for hostility.
“Constructive honesty is not a sign of dislike; it is a tool for improvement born out of a desire to see our nation succeed,” he said.

The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder also pointed to what he described as contradictory reactions to his work.
“Just recently, I was accused of being ‘too supportive’ of the coaching staff,” Oliseh said. “To now be accused of the opposite suggests a misunderstanding of my role as an analyst.
“My loyalty to the Green and White is unwavering and requires no defence. Let us move past these distractions and unite in our support for the players.”
