Ex-Super Eagles gaffer leads Benin to first-ever Afcon win

Benin Republic earned their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations victory as former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr masterminded a 1-0 win over Botswana in Rabat on Saturday.

The decisive moment came in the 28th minute when defender Yohan Roche exchanged a one-two with returning striker Steve Mounie, looping a shot over Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko. The goal marked Benin’s maiden victory in normal time across five tournament editions and 16 matches.

Botswana, aiming for a first Afcon win on only their second finals appearance, came close to equalising when Mothusi Johnson’s superb free-kick struck the crossbar shortly after Roche’s goal. Phoko also produced two fine saves in the second half, denying Benin a more comfortable margin of victory.

Rohr was able to restore several key players for the match, including national team record scorer Mounie, goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou, centre-back Mohamed Tijani, and winger Junior Olaitan, following injuries and suspensions in their opening defeat to DR Congo.

Botswana coach Morena Ramoreboli introduced 19-year-old forward Losika Ratshukudu, but his side struggled to convert possession into clear-cut chances.
