Hamburg agree deal to sign Nigeria forward Philip Otele from Basel

Hamburger SV have moved to strengthen their attacking options after reaching an agreement with Swiss champions Basel for the signing of Nigerian forward Philip Otele.

The 26-year-old is set to join the Bundesliga side on a loan deal that includes an option to make the move permanent. According to Sky sports Germany suggest Otele is due to undergo a medical, after which the transfer is expected to be confirmed.

Hamburg have been keen to conclude the deal quickly amid growing interest in the forward from across Europe. Otele had attracted attention from clubs in England, Scotland and Italy following an impressive spell in Switzerland, where his performances have significantly raised his profile.

Since joining Basel in January 2025, Otele has established himself as a key attacking figure. He made an immediate impression during his first half-season, registering nine goals and four assists in 21 league appearances, before continuing that form into the current campaign.

Across all competitions this season, the Nigerian has scored nine times and provided four assists in 32 matches, with his versatility across the frontline and direct style making him a valuable option in attack.

Otele becomes the latest Nigerian to secure a switch to the Bundesliga in recent weeks after Sani Suleiman joined RB Leipzig and Augsburg also agreed a deal in principle to sign Nigerian striker Uchenna Ogundu.

Hamburg currently sit 13th in the table and have struggled for goals this season, with only the bottom two sides scoring fewer.
