Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has questioned Nigeria’s push to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, suggesting that missing the tournament could be beneficial for the nation’s football.
Sodje, 45, made five appearances for Nigeria. Born in England, he was eligible to represent both England and Nigeria but chose Nigeria, following the example of his older brother, Efe.
Speaking to Brila.net, Sodje said structural reform should take priority over the prestige of competing on the global stage.
“Nigeria should move forward. If FIFA’s decision on the DR Congo case works in our favour, so be it. But to tell you the truth, I don’t want us to qualify,” he said.

The Super Eagles World Cup hopes partly hinge on a petition filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against DR Congo, challenging the eligibility of a player fielded during the intercontinental playoff qualifiers.

Sodje warned that participation without addressing systemic issues masks deeper problems.
“Playing in global tournaments without fixing structural weaknesses doesn’t help. We need to see how bad our football has become,” he added.

Despite his controversial stance, he acknowledged the possibility of a positive outcome.

“Personally, I am hoping we don’t go. But because I am Nigerian, I want to see the decision go our way,” he said.
