Lookman’s spark not enough as Sociedad win shootout lottery to claim Copa Del Rey crown

Ademola Lookman found the net in a dramatic Copa del Rey final, but it was Real Sociedad who emerged victorious, defeating Atlético Madrid 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Estadio La Cartuja.

The match exploded into life after just 14 seconds when Ander Barrenetxea headed Sociedad into an astonishing early lead before Atlético had even touched the ball.

Atletico responded with urgency, and their recovery was rewarded when Lookman produced a moment of quality. The Nigerian forward created space for himself inside the box and fired a low strike beyond Unai Marrero to bring his side level.

The contest remained open and fast-paced, with Goncalo Guedes going close for Sociedad before a decisive moment just before half-time.

Goalkeeper Juan Musso fouled Guedes in the area, allowing Mikel Oyarzabal to convert from the spot and restore Sociedad’s advantage.

Atletico pushed hard after the break, with Antoine Griezmann and Marcos Llorente driving their team forward, but clear-cut chances remained limited.

Neither side could find a winner in the additional period, though Alvarez struck the crossbar in the closest moment, sending the final to penalties.
