Rivers United have released an official statement following their heartbreaking failure to clinch the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League title, with Rangers edging them to the crown by just one point.
After an intense title race that stretched into the closing weeks of the campaign, Rivers United finished second on the NPFL table with 67 points, narrowly missing out on becoming league champions as Rangers secured the title.
Despite the disappointment, the Port Harcourt club still ended the season on a positive note by securing qualification for next season’s CAF Champions League, ensuring continental football returns to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
In a statement issued after the conclusion of the season, Rivers United expressed gratitude to the Rivers State Government, supporters, and stakeholders while reflecting on a campaign that saw them remain in title contention until the very end.
The club described their runners-up finish as proof of the resilience, discipline, and unity shown by players, coaches, management, and staff throughout a demanding 20-team NPFL season.

While admitting disappointment at missing out on the ultimate prize, Rivers United acknowledged Rangers’ triumph and vowed to return stronger next season.
“We narrowly missed the title, but competing at the highest level and challenging for it until the final weeks reaffirms the standard and ambition that define this club,” the statement read.
“While the ultimate prize eluded us, we accept the result with grace and respect for the champions. Our focus remains clear: to build on this foundation, address our shortcomings, and return next season with greater resolve to bring the NPFL trophy back to Port Harcourt, where it belongs.”
The Pride of Rivers also reserved special appreciation for Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Ministry of Sports, and supporters whose backing helped sustain the club throughout the campaign.
The club praised fans for standing by the team during moments of triumph and adversity, insisting their passion remained the driving force behind the season’s achievements.
“To our genuine fans and supporters, the Pride of Rivers, your passion has been our driving force,” the statement added.
“From the stands of Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium to every corner of the state and beyond, your unwavering belief has carried this team through triumph and adversity.”

Signed by General Manager Sir Chief Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, Rivers United insisted the campaign should not be viewed as the end of a journey but rather a foundation for greater success.
With CAF Champions League football secured, attention now turns to FA Cup Clash against Enugu Rangers while strengthening the squad and mounting another serious challenge for the NPFL title next season.
