Nigeria make Unity Cup history after comfortable final triumph over Jamaica

Nigeria’s Super Eagles underlined their dominance in the Unity Cup by defeating Jamaica 3-0 in Saturday’s final at The Valley in London, securing a record fourth title and maintaining their perfect record in the competition.

While much of the football world’s attention was focused on the UEFA Champions League final in Budapest, there was silverware on offer in south London, and the Super Eagles once again proved why they remain the tournament’s most successful side.

Eric Chelle’s men made the perfect start, taking the lead inside the opening four minutes through Alhassan Yusuf.

The midfielder reacted quickest after Jamaica goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke parried an initial effort following a long throw into the penalty area, with Yusuf pouncing on the rebound to fire Nigeria ahead.

The early goal settled the Super Eagles, who controlled large periods of the contest through disciplined defending and intelligent midfield play.

Jamaica briefly threatened to find a way back into the game when Kaheim Dixon went down inside the box following a collision with goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, but appeals for a penalty were waved away.

Despite Jamaica’s efforts, Nigeria remained largely in control and looked the more dangerous side whenever they attacked.

The second goal arrived shortly before the hour mark and effectively ended the contest.

Femi Azeez, who was one of the standout performers on the day, produced a brilliant run down the left flank before reaching the byline and delivering a precise cross into the six-yard box.

Waiting at the far post was Terem Moffi, who made no mistake from close range, powering home a header to double Nigeria’s advantage.

The goal capped another encouraging display from Moffi, who continued his impressive return to international action under Chelle.

Nigeria continued to create chances as Jamaica struggled to cope with the Super Eagles’ energy and movement in the final third.

Yusuf then completed his brace deep into stoppage time, putting the result beyond doubt and sealing a comprehensive victory for the three-time African champions.

The midfielder’s second goal crowned an outstanding individual performance and ensured Nigeria finished the tournament in emphatic fashion.

The victory means the Super Eagles have now won all four editions of the Unity Cup since the competition was launched in 2002, further strengthening their status as the tournament’s most successful nation.
