Former Bayelsa United star completes Rivers United move on one-year deal

Former Flying Eagles goalkeeper Clinton Andy Ezekiel has signed a one-year contract with Rivers United after leaving relegated Bayelsa United, securing his place in the NPFL for the 2026/27 season.

Rivers United have strengthened their squad ahead of the new Nigeria Premier Football League season by completing the signing of former Flying Eagles goalkeeper Clinton Andy Ezekiel on a one-year contract from Bayelsa United.

The move ensures the highly rated 20-year-old remains in the NPFL despite Bayelsa United’s relegation from the top flight at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

Ezekiel emerged as one of the standout performers for the Prosperity Boys during a difficult season, producing a series of assured displays between the posts even as the club battled unsuccessfully against the drop. He finished the campaign on a high by helping Bayelsa United secure an emphatic 4-0 victory over Kwara United on the final day of the season, although the result ultimately proved insufficient to preserve their top-flight status.

Despite the club’s relegation, Ezekiel’s consistency throughout the campaign attracted interest, with Rivers United moving quickly to secure one of the league’s promising young goalkeepers.

The shot stopper began his football journey with Hope of Glory before earning his breakthrough in the NPFL with Bayelsa United. His development has also been recognized at international level, having featured in Nigeria’s Flying Eagles setup, further highlighting his potential.

Rivers United will expect Ezekiel to provide increased competition and depth in their goalkeeping department as preparations continue for the 2026/27 season. His composure, shot-stopping ability and experience gained in both domestic football and the national youth team make him a valuable addition to the squad.

The one-year agreement offers the young goalkeeper another opportunity to continue his development with one of the NPFL’s established clubs while aiming to help Rivers United challenge strongly in the upcoming campaign.
