Lionel Messi has revealed that England remain the only traditional football powerhouse he has never faced in his illustrious career, describing Argentina’s upcoming FIFA World Cup semi final as a unique occasion.
The 39-year-old will finally tick that box when reigning world champions Argentina take on England in Atlanta on Wednesday, with a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at stake.
Argentina booked their place in the last four after defeating Switzerland 3-1 in extra time, while England also needed an additional 30 minutes to edge past Norway 2-1.
Despite facing some of world football’s biggest nations across nearly two decades, Messi admitted England have always been the missing piece.
“Playing against England is special because they are a powerhouse, and matches against powerhouses are always special,” Messi told ESPN Argentina.
“It’s the first time I’m going to play against them. I’ve played against everyone except England, so it will be nice for that reason too.”

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner insisted, however, that sentiment will not distract Argentina from their objective.
“We’ll experience it for what it is: a World Cup semi-final against a great team, and we’ll try to arrive in the best possible shape to compete again.”
“It’s a match up with a lot of history, but we’re professionals. We’ll approach it like every other game and give everything until the end.”
The clash adds another chapter to one of international football’s most famous rivalries, although it will be Messi’s first appearance against England in Argentina colours.

Messi also credited the mentality within Lionel Scaloni’s squad, saying the hunger for success remains as strong as ever despite winning both the FIFA World Cup and Copa América in recent years.
“This squad never stops pushing; they always want more and strive to be on a par with the best.”
“What this team has achieved is no mean feat: winning the World Cup, winning the Copa América and reaching the semi-finals once again.”
