For five months, Stanley Nwabali’s departure from Chippa United remained one of African football’s biggest mysteries.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper had only recently committed his future to the South African Premiership side with a long-term contract extension before unexpectedly leaving by mutual consent in February. There was no public dispute, no transfer announcement and no detailed explanation from either the player or the club.

Instead, there was silence. that silence fuelled speculation. Supporters questioned whether he had fallen out with the club, whether a lucrative transfer had collapsed or whether there was more behind the scenes than either side was prepared to admit.

According to Nwabali’s representative, Mohammed Lawal, the 30-year-old did not simply leave Chippa United. He stepped away from football altogether as he struggled to cope with overwhelming grief after losing three close family members within a short period.

Nwabali’s difficult period began before Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin Republic in November 2024, when he lost his grandmother.

Hours after helping the Super Eagles secure a 1-1 draw in that match, tragedy struck again as his father, Chief Godspower Nwabali, passed away, forcing him to leave the national team camp to mourn with his family.

Barely weeks later, another heartbreaking blow arrived when his mother, Grace Nwabali, died on New Year’s Day in 2025.

Three devastating bereavements in quick succession left the goalkeeper carrying emotional burdens far beyond football.

“It has been very difficult for Stanley,” Lawal told ESPN.

“People don’t always know what is going on with these players. They only see them on the field. They know them as footballers, but they don’t know that they are human beings too. Like everyone else, they go through life’s challenges.”

Having suddenly become responsible for numerous family obligations while trying to maintain elite performances for club and country, the goalkeeper’s emotional wellbeing began to suffer.

“As a professional, he knew he had to keep playing, but it was affecting him and if he continued, he was going to destroy himself because when you’re not in the right mental state, it shows,” Lawal explained.

Looking back, many of the signs had already appeared on the pitch.

The usually calm goalkeeper became noticeably more animated during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign and Africa Cup of Nations appearances, often shouting at teammates and confronting opponents.

Supporters interpreted those moments as aggression. those closest to him saw something entirely different.

“If you look back, you’ll see the difference,” Lawal said.

“Stanley used to be lively and always smiling. During the last AFCON and the World Cup qualifiers, he became unusually aggressive. But that wasn’t the real Stanley.”

The emotional strain eventually reached breaking point. Lawal disclosed that Nwabali’s departure was never about seeking a new club or a bigger contract.

Instead, those around him encouraged him to stop before the emotional weight caused permanent damage.

“We told him, ‘This isn’t you. Take time away before you do permanent damage to your career,'” Lawal revealed.

The goalkeeper himself had already hinted at how close he came to walking away completely.

During the Africa Cup of Nations, Nwabali publicly admitted he had told Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi he wanted to quit football before teammates convinced him to continue.

When Chippa United confirmed his departure in February, the goalkeeper chose not to disclose the true reasons. Instead, he simply insisted that his happiness had to come first.

Nwabali on why he kept the truth private

The decision not to publicly explain his mental health struggles led to widespread speculation.

Lawal believes Nwabali deserved the privacy to deal with the darkest chapter of his life on his own terms.

“People deal with things differently,” he said.

“At that time, he didn’t want to tell anyone what he was going through. He believed he could handle it himself.”

He also dismissed suggestions that Nwabali had engineered his departure to secure a transfer elsewhere.

“It had nothing to do with the league, feeling bigger than the club, or receiving offers from elsewhere,” Lawal explained.

“He did it for himself so he could return to playing at the level he is capable of.”

Offers came but Nwabali was not Ready

Contrary to widespread rumours, interest in Nwabali remained strong throughout his absence.

Lawal confirmed there were serious approaches from clubs in Saudi Arabia, England and elsewhere across Africa.

Every offer was rejected not because clubs lost interest but because the goalkeeper knew he was not mentally ready to return to football.

Instead, he prioritized healing, taking time away from the game while receiving professional mental health support.

Support behind the scenes

One of the constants throughout Nwabali’s recovery was the backing of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle.

Lawal revealed the national team coach maintained regular communication with the goalkeeper during his time away, ensuring he never felt isolated from the national team setup.

“He had people who believed in him and gave him the space to heal,” Lawal said.

Why Chippa United became the perfect place to restart

Nwabali first joined Chippa United in 2022 and established himself as one of the club’s most influential players, even captaining the side during his spell in the Eastern Cape.

Nwabali’s return to Chippa United was made possible because the relationship between both parties had never broken down.

Club chairman Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi understood the circumstances surrounding the goalkeeper’s departure and supported his decision to prioritise his wellbeing.

That mutual respect laid the foundation for an emotional reunion.

According to Lawal, returning to a familiar environment gives Nwabali the ideal opportunity to rebuild both personally and professionally.

“If Stanley had joined a new club after being out for several months, they would only know him as a goalkeeper, not as a person,” Lawal explained.

“At Chippa, everyone knows him. They understand him. Instead of starting from the bottom in a new environment, he is returning to a place where people know who he is.”
