Ihezuo sends strong warning as Super Falcons target WAFCON title defence and World Cup ticket

Super Falcons forward Chiwendu Ihezuo says Nigeria will not underestimate any opponent as they chase an 11th WAFCON title and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Super Falcons forward Chiwendu Ihezuo has declared that Nigeria’s objective at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is straightforward: successfully defend their continental crown and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The nine-time African champions will head to Morocco determined to extend their dominance on the continent by winning a record 11th WAFCON title under head coach Justine Madugu.

Unlike the previous edition, however, this year’s tournament carries even greater significance, with places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil also up for grabs.

Ihezuo believes that added incentive means every team will arrive in Morocco with greater determination, warning that the Super Falcons cannot afford to underestimate any opponent.

“This tournament will be tougher, much tougher. Last year, there was no FIFA Women’s World Cup ticket to fight for,” Ihezuo told the Nigeria Football Federation.

“When the first blast of the whistle goes on 26th July, the focus of all the teams will be on the World Cup ticket. As defending champions, we cannot afford to be over confident.”

The Pachuca forward also delivered encouraging news regarding her fitness after spending a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury.

Ihezuo confirmed she has made a full recovery and is eager to rejoin the national team ahead of the tournament despite currently being involved in pre-season preparations with her Mexican club.

“God has been great and I give Him all the glory. I am now healed and fully recovered. Presently, my club is in pre season, but I am ready to fly to Morocco and team up with the Super Falcons of Africa to make Nigeria proud.”

Nigeria will enter the competition as one of the favorites to lift the trophy once again, but the Super Falcons know they must navigate a more competitive field as Africa’s best teams battle not only for continental supremacy but also for coveted places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
