FIFA has taken another step towards addressing the leadership crisis at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), with a new administrative arrangement set to shape the federation’s immediate future.
The move follows months of uncertainty after the resignation of former NFF president Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation’s executive leadership in August. However, details of the transition are still emerging, with an official announcement on the next phase yet to provide all the answers.
The development follows the FIFA Council meeting held in Zurich on October 15, 2026, after which the Bureau of the FIFA Council approved the appointment of a Normalization Committee to oversee the NFF.
The committee is expected to remain in place until May 31, 2027, at the latest, although its members have yet to be officially announced.
The approval provides for a temporary administrative structure to oversee the NFF during the transition. The committee’s tenure is expected to run until May 31, 2027, at the latest, although its specific responsibilities and working arrangements depend on FIFA’s official terms of reference.
Those details are particularly important because the committee’s composition and mandate will determine how the federation is managed during the interim period and what steps are taken towards restoring elected leadership.
For now, FIFA’s approval represents progress in the process, but it does not answer every question surrounding the future administration of Nigerian football.
The announcement of the appointed members is the next major milestone, with stakeholders waiting to learn who will take responsibility for the committee and how its mandate will be implemented.
How Nigerian football reached this point
The leadership crisis intensified in August following the resignations of Gusau, Sanusi and members of the NFF executive leadership.
The departures prompted consultations involving FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the National Sports Commission (NSC) and stakeholders across Nigerian football as efforts began to establish a way forward.
A joint FIFA-CAF delegation visited Nigeria in September to engage stakeholders and examine possible solutions, including the establishment of a Normalisation Committee.
The committee subsequently emerged as the proposed mechanism for providing temporary leadership while the federation works through the transition.

Beyond filling the immediate leadership vacuum, the transition is taking place amid calls to strengthen the NFF’s governance structures and electoral processes.
Earlier consultations considered longstanding administrative concerns and ways to improve confidence in the running of Nigerian football.
The eventual terms of reference will be important in establishing the scope of the committee’s responsibilities and the process it is expected to follow.
NSC chairman Shehu Dikko had previously said FIFA would determine the composition and terms of reference of any Normalisation Committee, emphasising that the process must comply with the relevant football statutes and procedures.
That leaves FIFA with a central role in shaping the interim arrangement and defining the path towards the restoration of elected leadership.
The unanswered question
The approval has moved the process forward, but the identities of the committee members remain unknown publicly, as do the full details of their mandate.
Those announcements will help clarify who is expected to oversee the NFF, what responsibilities the committee will assume and how the transition will be managed before the deadline of May 31, 2027.

In the MweNigerian football, the significance of FIFA’s latest move will ultimately depend not only on the appointment itself, but also on how the committee carries out its responsibilities and whether the transition provides a clear route back to stable, elected administration.
Until FIFA releases the membership and detailed terms of reference, the structure of the new arrangement and the precise steps towards the next phase of NFF leadership remains to be fully defined.
