David Otorbi’s encouraging start to life in Valencia’s senior team has been interrupted by an injury that left the club waiting for medical results after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Villarreal.
The 19-year-old Nigerian-eligible winger was withdrawn during the first half at Mestalla, with manager Javier Aguirre hoping the problem proves less serious than feared.
The timing is significant for a youngster who has begun making his mark in the first team. Otorbi scored his first LaLiga goal against Racing Santander on October 11, finding the net in a 2-2 draw, and has registered one goal in eight league appearances this season.
His latest setback now leaves Valencia waiting to establish how long he might be unavailable.

Aguirre acknowledged the effect Otorbi’s injury had on Valencia, highlighting the winger’s recent work and performances.
“Otorbi’s injury affects us because he was playing and training very well,” the manager said, according to Valencia’s official website.
The club is yet to determine the full extent of the problem. Aguirre said the initial medical assessment offered some encouragement but stressed that further examinations were needed.
“We hope it’s nothing serious. The doctor is reassuring, but we won’t be able to assess the extent of the injury until we see the images,” he said.
Initial reports have suggested a possible hamstring injury, although Valencia must await the scan results before confirming the diagnosis and establishing a recovery timeline.
A setback at a crucial stage of his development
Otorbi’s injury comes as he attempts to turn his growing opportunities into a regular place in Valencia’s senior squad.
His goal against Racing Santander was an important milestone, arriving after he came off the bench. His involvement against Villarreal offered another opportunity to build momentum before the injury forced his withdrawal.
For Valencia, the immediate concern is his fitness and how quickly he can return. The club will be reluctant to set a timetable until the medical examinations provide a clearer picture.

Born in Valencia to Nigerian parents, Otorbi joined the Spanish club’s academy in 2019 and has progressed through its youth system.
He made history by becoming Valencia’s youngest player to feature in an official first-team match, debuting at 16 years, two months and 19 days. He later became the club’s youngest player to appear in LaLiga.
Otorbi has also represented Spain at youth level, including with the under-18 team. His Nigerian heritage has nevertheless made his progress a point of interest for followers of Nigerian football and players who could be eligible to represent the Super Eagles.
Liverpool interest adds to the attention around Otorbi
Otorbi’s emergence has also attracted transfer attention. In a report published on October 23, TheAthleticNG detailed claims of Liverpool’s interest in the forward and reported that Valencia had exercised a contract extension option that tied him to the club until 2031, increasing his release clause from €30 million to €60 million.
The injury introduces another development in the young forward’s season, but there is no indication yet that it has altered Liverpool’s reported interest or Valencia’s position on his future.
In the meantime, the focus is on the medical assessment. Otorbi had been making progress at Mestalla; the scan results should determine whether this is a brief interruption or a more significant obstacle in his breakthrough campaign.
