Nottingham Forest reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League after defeating FC Midtjylland on penalties following a dramatic second-leg encounter in Denmark.

Nigeria defender Ola Aina came on in the second half as Forest overturned a first-leg deficit to level the tie before securing a 3-0 victory in the shootout.

Trailing 1-0 from the first meeting, the visitors responded with a 2-1 win on the night to make it 2-2 on aggregate and force extra time.

Forest, managed by Vítor Pereira, dominated much of the contest and took the lead five minutes before half-time when Nicolás Domínguez headed in from close range after a well-worked move.

The English side extended their advantage early in the second half as captain Ryan Yates struck from distance to put Forest ahead in the tie.

However, Midtjylland responded in the 69th minute when Martin Erlić capitalised on a loose ball to level the aggregate score and send the match into extra time.

Pereira introduced Aina in the 75th minute, adding defensive solidity as both sides pushed for a decisive goal. Despite further chances, neither team could find a winner over 120 minutes.

In the penalty shootout, the hosts faltered, missing all three of their attempts. Forest were clinical, with Morgan Gibbs-White, Ibrahim Sangaré and Neco Williams all converting to seal progression.
