Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has been handed interim charge of the Super Falcons for their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures against Comoros in October, as the Nigeria Football Federation continues its search for a substantive head coach.
Eguavoen will lead the senior women’s national team on an interim basis as Nigeria begins its campaign for a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with the technical crew also featuring a number of experienced figures from the country’s women’s and men’s national teams.
He will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, the current head coach of Nigeria Women’s Football League side Nasarawa Amazons.
Danjuma brings considerable experience of working with Nigeria’s women’s national teams and previously led the Falconets at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.
The appointment gives Eguavoen and his technical team responsibility for navigating the Falcons through their October qualifying assignment against Comoros while the federation works towards appointing a permanent coach.
Baruwa joins technical crew
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa has also been drafted into the interim technical team as goalkeeper trainer.
Baruwa has worked with several of Nigeria’s national teams over the years, including the Super Eagles, CHAN Eagles, Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets.
His experience across the national-team structure is expected to provide additional continuity within the Falcons’ technical setup during the Olympic qualifying campaign.
Former Falcons defender Yusuf returns as coach
Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf will also serve as one of Eguavoen’s assistant coaches.
Yusuf brings extensive experience from her playing days with the national team, having earned 68 international caps for Nigeria.
She represented the Super Falcons at four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, three FIFA Women’s World Cups and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Her inclusion provides the interim coaching team with someone who has experienced major international competitions with the Falcons and understands the demands of representing Nigeria at the highest level.
