Confederation of African Football (CAF) Head of Safety and Security, Dr Christian Emeruwa, has explained the real benefits of appointments into FIFA and CAF committees, saying they should be used to project Nigeria’s image.
His comments follow the appointment of several Nigerians into FIFA committees.
Ibrahim Musa Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation, joins the FIFA Men’s Club Competitions Committee; Amaju Pinnick, former NFF President and FIFA Council Member, becomes Deputy Chair of the FIFA Men’s National Teams Competitions Committee.
NFF Executive Committee member, Aisha Falode was appointed to the FIFA Media and Communications Committee; while A.U. Mustapha (SAN), former CAF Appeal Board President, joins the FIFA Anti-Racism and Anti-Discrimination Committee.
In his piece titled “Benefits of Being Appointed as a Member of a FIFA or CAF Committee,” Dr Emeruwa wrote:
“Let me say clearly that the benefits are indeed significant though they depend largely on how the appointed member leverages the opportunity to network and use their access within the inner circles to positively project Nigeria’s image and interests, without breaching any established codes of conduct.”
He clarified that such roles are based on individual merit and expertise, not necessarily a national endorsement.
“Such an appointment represents individual recognition rather than a direct endorsement of the country’s standing.

However, having a Nigerian in such a position naturally projects the nation’s presence, reminding the global football community that Nigeria remains an active and valuable stakeholder in world and continental football.”
Emeruwa said committee members contribute their professional insight to FIFA and CAF’s decision-making process, working within clearly defined mandates.
He also noted that the financial benefits are limited.
“Financially, the benefits of committee membership are modest. Members are typically entitled only to the coverage of basic costs associated with their service such as flights, accommodation, and allowances during official meetings. Beyond that, there are no significant financial rewards.”

He added that the real value lies in building relationships and creating opportunities for others.
“Those appointed can build strong relationships with committee secretariats and encourage the consideration of qualified Nigerians for technical or freelance support roles provided those individuals meet the required standards and selection criteria.

This is one of the most meaningful ways such appointments can yield benefits for our country and its professionals.”
Dr Emeruwa urged Nigerians to celebrate their representatives while demanding accountability and strategic use of their positions.
“While we celebrate the recent appointments of our compatriots into various FIFA and CAF committees, we should also look beyond the symbolism and focus on how these roles can be used strategically to open doors for other qualified Nigerians within the international football ecosystem.
