Former Super Eagles midfielder Garba Lawal has praised the impressive performances of Nigerian players across Europe this season, highlighting their growing influence in continental competitions.
From the UEFA Champions League to the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League, several Nigerian stars have played key roles for their clubs.
Christantus Uche has reached the semi-finals of the Conference League, while Taiwo Awoniyi and Ola Aina helped Nottingham Forest eliminate FC Porto featuring compatriots Terem Moffi and Zaidu Sanusi from the Europa League.
In the Champions League, Ademola Lookman delivered a decisive moment, scoring to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory over FC Barcelona and send his side into the semi-finals, where they will face Arsenal FC, managed by Mikel Arteta.
“Value and Experience” on the Rise
Lawal, an Olympic gold medallist, singled out the Europa League clash between Nottingham Forest and Porto as particularly impressive.
“It was a very good game and, of course, that adds more value for our players to play at the highest level,” he said.
“It increases their transfer value and experience. I’m happy to see them playing well at their various club sides, which is fantastic for their profile and for our national team too.”
Backing Zaidu Despite Struggles
Lawal also came to the defence of Zaidu Sanusi, who endured a difficult outing after being substituted at half-time.
According to the former Roda JC midfielder, the defender may not have been fully fit.
“Whenever I don’t see him giving 100%, I suspect he has a small injury. When he is fully fit, he is something else he’s fantastic,” Lawal added.
Forest Backed for Semi-Final Clash
Looking ahead, Nottingham Forest will face Aston Villa in the Europa League semi finals a matchup Lawal expects to be fiercely contested.
“They know each other. They play in the same league, they know the same players, the same environment,” he said.
“It’s going to be very tough because of that familiarity, but I’m backing Forest to win.”
Forest currently sit 16th in the Premier League, their European run continues to offer a bright spark in their season
