Solution FC defender Solomon Akpan says the 2024/25 Nigeria National league season was one of the most defining of his young career, describing it as a year that taught him what football truly means both in joy and in pain.
In an exclusive interview with Athletic NG, the composed centre-back reflected on a campaign filled with highs, heartbreak, and personal growth as he continues to develop into one of the NNL’s most dependable defenders.
“Last season was very good for me and for Solution FC,” Akpan began. “It taught me what football means. We went through so many things.”
The dynamic defender played 18 matches out of 20 with 2 Assists in the game against First Bank and Madiba respectively.

The club started the season strongly, sitting second on the table after the first round. However, the tragic loss of head coach Uche Okagbue midway through the campaign derailed their momentum and tested their unity.
“After we lost him, things weren’t going well with us,” Akpan recalled. “But we finished well thanks to my teammates. We rallied together.”

“I faced a lot of challenges personally, but they made me better. That’s part of the game.”
Akpan was instrumental in a defensive setup that conceded just five goals in the first round. His positional discipline and mental focus were key to Solution FC’s early-season form.

“NNL is very tough. You need concentration. People think winning at home is all that matters, but a team can come from behind and shock you,” he explained.
“As a centre-back, I had a big role. I played with joy and gave everything. I followed my coach’s instructions, and things went well.”
The player Akpan models his game after is no surprise.
“Thiago Silva is my role model. I love him so much,” he said. “Watching him made me realise football is fun and simple if you can read the game. I watch all his clips and follow him closely.”

With the new season on the horizon, Akpan is dreaming bigger.
“My target is for God to take me to another level. I want to play outside Nigeria and get a second call-up to the national team.”
“I’m working hard and doing my best. I want to see myself abroad and, hopefully, playing for my dream club Chelsea.”
