Ogunmodede praises Soname amid Remo Stars resignation reports

Super Eagles assistant coach Daniel Ogunmodede has paid tribute to Remo Stars owner Kunle Soname in a heartfelt appreciation letter, amid reports that his relationship with the club’s hierarchy has broken down.

In the letter, shared on his social media platforms under the title Appreciation, Ogunmodede thanked Soname for a decade of support, describing him as a mentor who played a defining role in his personal and professional growth.

“You placed your trust in a young coach who was still finding his way, and you stood by that decision even when the journey was not smooth,” Ogunmodede wrote.

“Thank you for treating me not just as a coach, but as a son and a project worth nurturing.”

Multiple reports have suggested that Ogunmodede has tendered his resignation following internal disagreements at the club, although Remo Stars have yet to issue an official statement.

The 45-year-old has been absent from the Sky Blue Stars dugout since their 5–1 defeat by Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round. He missed the return leg of the continental tie.

According to reports, Ogunmodede’s extended absences earlier in the season contributed to internal tension. He missed more than 10 league matches while working as an assistant to Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle.

He was also away with the Nigeria B team at the African Nations Championship and missed most of the club’s pre-season preparations. He recently returned from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with the Super Eagles.

Athletic NG has reported that Ogunmodede was increasingly sidelined during his periods away, with his assistant, Sulaiman Kamil Folarin, allegedly warned against sharing technical information with him.

A reported tactical shift from a back three to a back four, a system not favoured by Ogunmodede is also said to have deepened the rift.

Ogunmodede signed a three-year contract extension in August 2024, tying him to Remo Stars until 2027, and has been a central figure in the club’s rise in Nigerian football.

He joined Remo Stars in 2015 and was placed in charge of the senior team in 2020. In September 2021, he led the club back to the NPFL after finishing runners-up in the Nigeria National League play-offs.

After a brief spell as assistant manager at Portugal’s CD Feirense in 2021, Ogunmodede returned to Remo Stars in 2022. He guided the club to back-to-back second-place finishes in the league in 2023 and 2024.

On 27 April 2025, he led Remo Stars to their first-ever NPFL title, making them the first South-West club to win the championship since Julius Berger in 2000.
