NPFL unrest: Kwara United condemn violence, apologise to Rivers United GM

Kwara United have condemned the violence that followed their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match against Rivers United, describing the incidents as “unacceptable” and pledging to cooperate with authorities.

The club issued a statement on Wednesday after their rescheduled Gameweek 22 fixture against Rivers United ended in a 1-1 draw in Ilorin.

In the statement, Kwara United said they “unequivocally condemn the actions of the irrational elements” involved in the unrest, particularly the attack on Chief Okey Kpalukwu, Chairman of Chairmen in the NPFL.

The club apologised to Kpalukwu, the Rivers United delegation, match officials, security personnel and spectators affected by the disturbances.

“Kwara United FC firmly believes that sportsmanship and respect for match officials, opponents, and fellow football administrators must remain paramount at all times,” the statement read.

The club added that the behaviour of those involved did not represent its core values or the majority of its supporters.

To prevent a recurrence, Kwara United said they are committed to cooperating with relevant authorities to identify and prosecute individuals found to have perpetrated or incited the violence.
