NWFL 2025: Flawless at home, fearless everywhere – Bayelsa Queens title march continues

Bayelsa Queens edged Rivers Angels 1-0 in a tense South-South derby, keeping their unbeaten record intact and securing group leadership.

Bayelsa Queens maintained their perfect home record and extended their unbeaten run in the NWFL Premiership with a 1-0 victory over regional rivals Rivers Angels on Matchday 13.

In a match that held significance beyond qualification with both sides already through to the Super Six, it was Alaba Olabiyi who provided the decisive moment, scoring in the 3rd minute.

In the 45th minute, Bayelsa had a golden opportunity to double their lead when Florence Alexander stepped up to take a penalty. However effort was off target, leaving the scoreline unchanged at 1-0.

The result sees Bayelsa solidify their position at the top of their group, while Rivers Angels suffer just their second defeat of the season.

Bayelsa Queens, coached by Ogbonda Whyte, have now won all seven of their home matches this season. The early goal proved enough as they managed the game with discipline and tactical control, limiting Rivers Angels to few clear chances.

Rivers, managed by Tosan Blackson, had impressed away from home this season with four wins in six, but were unable to find an equaliser despite improved second-half pressure.

The victory also extends Bayelsa’s positive record in this fixture. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the reverse leg in Port Harcourt earlier this season, but Bayelsa now have six wins in their last 13 meetings with Rivers Angels.
