Olayinka strikes late dagger as APOEL silence Omonia in Nicosia derby

Super Eagles forward Peter Olayinka scored a dramatic late winner to guide APOEL FC to a 1-0 victory over city rivals AC Omonia in Sunday’s Nicosia derby in the Cypriot First Division.

Despite having limited implications for league leaders Omonia, the contest carried significant local importance, with APOEL seeking bragging rights in one of Cyprus fiercest rivalries.

Both teams began brightly and fashioned promising openings, but clear chances were scarce and the sides went into the interval level.

In the 81st minute, the Nigerian capitalised on hesitation in the Omonia defence, reacting quickest after a failed clearance to drive the ball into the net and seal APOEL’s 11th league win of the campaign.

The strike was his first for the club since arriving as a free agent earlier this month and came in only his second appearance.
