Pyramids sink Rivers United in CAF Champions League opener

CAF Champions League holders Pyramids FC launched their title defence with a commanding 3–0 victory over Rivers United, powered by a sensational second-half hat-trick from Ahmed Atef El Sayed.

The Group B opener in Cairo brought together two sides expected to challenge strongly in a pool that also features RS Berkane of Morocco and Zambia’s Power Dynamos.

Findi George led Rivers United looked capable of matching the champions in the 45 minutes, containing pressure well and showing glimpses of promise on the counter.

But the contest shifted decisively after the interval. Atef Ahmed broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second half with a calm finish inside the area.

The forward struck again in the 57th minute, pouncing quickly to double the advantage and drain the momentum Rivers United had built through disciplined first-half defending.
