Report: Why Chukwueze must now prove his worth

Samuel Chukwueze urged to show consistency and maturity after a poor AC Milan season, with Peter Ijeh challenging him to define his game

For years, Samuel Chukwueze has dazzled fans with his blistering pace, quick feet, and left-footed flair but as the Nigerian winger closes the chapter on what he describes as the worst season of his career, one message is becoming increasingly clear: talent alone is no longer enough.

The AC Milan man, who joined the Italian giants from Villarreal with high expectations, has come under scrutiny after a disappointing 2024/25 campaign.

Across 26 Serie A appearances, Chukwueze managed just three goals five in total across all competitions (36 matches) a steep drop in output for a player once tipped to be among Nigeria’s top attacking exports.

Former Super Eagles striker Peter Ijeh didn’t hold back in his assessment of the 25-year-old’s recent form.

“Being a left-footer, he’s unique. But he has to really up and define his game, in everything, you need consistency.”Ijeh said.

That word consistency has long hovered around Chukwueze’s career like a question mark. On his best days, he is electric and unplayable. On others, he fades into anonymity, struggling to impose himself in high-stakes moments. At Milan, surrounded by fierce competition for starting spots, that inconsistency proved costly.

Still, there are signs of life. The Nigerian winger reminded fans of his quality during a recent international friendly against Jamaica, scoring a vital goal and impressing under Super Eagles boss Eric Chelle.

His performance reignited debate over his role in the national team, with many calling for him to be included in upcoming qualifiers — but on merit, not name.

Chukwueze himself acknowledges the dip and voiced his disappointment in a recent interview with Modo Victor.

“Milan’s supporters are among the best in the world. They truly deserve more than we gave them last season, they stand with us through rain and cold, taking off their shirts, singing, and backing the team wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, we let them down.”

The winger hopes next season offers a chance for redemption.

“I hope next season will be much better — with triumphs in the Scudetto, Coppa Italia, and a return to the Champions League to make up for it all.”

But hopes won’t be enough. For Chukwueze, the time has come to evolve — to sharpen his decision-making, improve end product, and impose himself with greater maturity.

The tools are there. What’s missing is consistency, and the ability to influence games not occasionally, but reliably.

The next chapter in his career could be decisive. If Chukwueze can prove that he’s more than just raw talent, he still has the potential to become a vital asset for both club and country.
