Super Eagles forward Salim Fago Lawal is edging closer to a high-profile transfer after just 18 months in Croatian football, with talks progressing over a deal that could see him leave NK Istra 1961.
According to reports from Croatian outlet Sportske Novosti, negotiations are already at an advanced stage, with a transfer expected to be finalised in the coming days. Azerbaijani giants Qarabağ FK are also understood to be among the clubs pursuing his signature, according to Transfermarkt.
The 23-year-old, who was among youngest players at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, has emerged as one of the standout attacking prospects in the Croatian top flight this season, prompting interest from clubs outside the country.

The proposed fee is expected to exceed €2m, a notable figure for a player who arrived from Nigerian academy football less than two years ago.
Lawal has enjoyed a productive campaign with Istra, contributing five league goals and two assists in 17 appearances, while also finding the net twice in the Croatian Cup.
His direct style, pace and willingness to run at defenders have made him one of the most effective young attackers in the league and a key asset for a club known for developing players before selling on.

His profile rose further earlier this year when he was named in Nigeria’s squad for AFCON 2025, a call-up that came as a surprise given his limited experience at international level. He went on to make his tournament debut during the game against Uganda and later collected a bronze medal as Nigeria finished third.

Following his return from international duty, Lawal quickly made an impact back in Croatia, scoring on his first appearance after the tournament.
