Former Super Eagles forward Mohammed Gambo has expressed surprise at Emmanuel Dennis’ ongoing free-agent status, describing it as “difficult to understand” given the winger’s talent and experience.
Dennis, 27, has been without a club since leaving Nottingham Forest a few weeks ago. Reports last week suggested a possible return to his former side Watford, but the move reportedly broke down after medical tests raised fitness concerns.
The Championship outfit are, however, said to be open to revisiting the deal later in the year.
Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, Gambo who featured for Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup admitted his confusion at the player’s current struggles.
“I really do not understand why he is not playing first-team football or with a club at the moment because he is a very good player,” Gambo said.

“There has to be something wrong somewhere or something I am not aware of. A talented player like that should be scoring goals and providing assists, but right now, he has no club.”

The Kano Pillars assistant coach added that discipline or motivation could be factors but hopes the forward quickly finds a new team.
“Is it a discipline problem? Is it motivation? I really do not understand it, and I wish I had the answers,” he added.
“His style of play is one that many clubs would want, but for some reason, he is still not playing. I heard Watford wanted to sign him, but later changed their minds. I hope he can get a club soon as a free agent.”

Dennis first joined Watford in 2021, scoring 10 goals during their Premier League campaign before earning an eight-figure move to Nottingham Forest.
He returned to Vicarage Road on loan in January 2024, netting four goals in 18 appearances, before another brief stint at Blackburn Rovers.

The forward has represented Nigeria eight times, scoring once against São Tomé and Príncipe, and remains one of the country’s most naturally gifted attackers still seeking a new chapter in his career.
