Their dismal start in the World Cup qualifying campaign has secured just three points for them in four games, putting them in fifth place in the group standings.

The two countries have a recent history, having clashed in Group D of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with Rwanda earning four points out of a possible six against the Super Eagles.
