Bassey makes Fulham history with season award

Calvin Bassey has been named Fulham Player of the Season for 2024–25, becoming the club’s first Nigerian and African to receive the honour

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been named Player of the Season at Fulham for the 2024–25 campaign, becoming both the first Nigerian and the first African to win the award.

The 25-year-old centre-back was a standout performer in Marco Silva’s side, playing a central role in Fulham’s solid Premier League campaign, which saw the club finish 11th on the table.

Bassey featured in 35 of Fulham’s 38 league matches, scoring once and delivering consistently strong defensive performances.

His statistics underlined his importance: five clean sheets, 0.6 interceptions, 1.5 tackles, 4.8 ball recoveries, and 3.2 clearances per match while committing just one error that led to a goal.

Now in his second season at Craven Cottage following a move from Ajax in 2023, Bassey edged out Fulham’s leading scorer Raúl Jiménez and compatriot Alex Iwobi — who featured in all 38 league matches, contributing nine goals and six assists in all competitions to claim the award.

Bassey’s recognition marks a milestone moment in the club’s history. Since the award’s inception in 2004–05 when Luís Boa Morte was the first recipient — no African player had previously won it.

Past winners include Clint Dempsey, Brian McBride, Ross McCormack, and Aleksandar Mitrović. Antonee Robinson was last season’s recipient.
