‘We deserve an apology’ – NSC DG disputes Ajibade over Super Falcons WAFCON unpaid bonus claim

Nigeria face Portugal in a key friendly in Lisbon as both teams prepare for major continental tournaments. Here's what's at stake.

National Sports Commission (NSC) has denied claims by Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade that players are yet to receive their WAFCON bonuses.

Speaking on Arise TV, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade said the Falcons’ entitlements were cleared before their final match against Morocco.

“I know authoritatively that all their bonuses, without going into figures, have been paid. I confirmed this with the NFF and even with Ajibade herself, except maybe for one or two players whose accounts are with the CBN. To say the team hasn’t been paid is not true,” Olopade said.

Olopade added that President Bola Tinubu’s pledge of housing for the squad was still being processed.

“It will be paid. Work has begun to ensure the players receive their apartments quickly. This government fulfils its promises,” he insisted.

The NSC DG expressed frustration at suggestions the players had not been rewarded.

“We deserve an apology because it is wrong. It’s a lie. Those bonuses, almost $30,000 each, were paid even before the final match. To say otherwise is misleading.”

Ajibade, however, had told With Chude that neither the $100,000 presidential largesse announced in July nor the team’s match bonuses had reached the players.

“We have not received our money oo. Please, they have not paid. All the promises you heard back and forth, we have not received anything,” she said.

“People are begging. We have not received it. When they pay it, you will see. Even our match bonuses and everything, everything is still a work in progress.”

The dispute leaves uncertainty over the Falcons’ financial situation, with Ajibade insisting “nothing has reached us” while the NSC maintains the payments were already made.

The Super Falcons defeated Morocco in a dramatic final 3–2 to win their 10th WAFCON title.

President Tinubu conferred Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) honours on each player, alongside a three-bedroom apartment at the Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja and $100,000 in cash.

Members of the technical crew were awarded $50,000 each.
