Super Eagles star Okoye explains why Osimhen stands apart

Maduka Okoye

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has described teammate Victor Osimhen as “irreplaceable”, citing the striker’s unique presence beyond his technical ability.

Speaking from Nigeria’s training camp in Antalya, Okoye said Osimhen offers something distinct that sets him apart from other forwards available to the national team.

“He’s incredibly strong,” Okoye said in an interview conducted as part of a behind-the-scenes media session with his club. “Quality aside, he brings an energy to the pitch that no one else brings. He’s a special player.”

Osimhen is currently recovering from an injury sustained during a UEFA Champions League fixture while playing for Galatasaray, raising concerns about his availability ahead of upcoming international matches.

Despite Nigeria’s attacking depth, Okoye’s comments underline the importance of the forward’s physicality, intensity and leadership within the squad.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper also reflected on his own development at Udinese, where he says he has found stability and an ideal environment to grow.

“I feel great here; it’s the perfect place for football, we’re lucky to have an incredible training centre. When I step onto the pitch, I feel something stirong.”
