Nigeria’s Super Eagles will return to familiar territory on Wednesday when they face Poland in Warsaw, hoping to preserve a flawless record against the European nation while continuing the positive momentum generated by their recent Unity Cup triumph.
Although both countries have established themselves as respected forces in international football, their paths have crossed only once at senior level. That solitary encounter remains one of Nigeria’s most impressive victories over a European opponent in recent years.
As Eric Chelle’s side prepare for a second-ever meeting with the White and Reds, memories of that famous night in 2018 continue to resonate among Nigerian supporters.

Nigeria and Poland first met on March 23, 2018, in an international friendly staged at the Stadion Miejski in Wroclaw.
The fixture formed part of both teams’ preparations for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and featured several high-profile stars.
Poland arrived with one of the deadliest strikers in world football, Robert Lewandowski, while the Super Eagles boasted a talented squad that included Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi, Leon Balogun and William Troost-Ekong.
After an evenly contested opening half, the decisive moment arrived just after the hour mark.
Moses embarked on a trademark run into the Polish penalty area, weaving past defenders before drawing a foul. The former Chelsea winger then dusted himself off and calmly converted from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to hand Nigeria a crucial lead.
The goal ultimately proved enough to separate the two sides.
While Moses grabbed the headlines, Nigeria’s defensive performance was equally impressive. Balogun and Troost-Ekong, a partnership that later became affectionately known as the “Oyibo Wall” among supporters, successfully neutralised Lewandowski and restricted Poland’s attacking threat throughout the contest.
Behind them, Francis Uzoho produced a composed display in goal, making several important saves as the Super Eagles held firm to secure a famous 1-0 victory.
That result remains Nigeria’s only meeting with Poland and gives the Super Eagles a perfect head-to-head record against Wednesday’s opponents.

Ironically, the victory over Poland has not sparked a sustained run of success against European opposition.
Since that memorable evening in Wroclaw, Nigeria have managed only one win in seven matches against teams from Europe.
The Super Eagles suffered an immediate setback four days after defeating Poland, losing 2-0 to Serbia in another World Cup warm-up fixture.
Further defeats followed as England secured a 2-1 victory at Wembley before the Czech Republic edged Nigeria 1-0 in the final preparation match before the World Cup.
Nigeria’s campaign in Russia also began disappointingly with a 2-0 defeat to Croatia, inspired by Luka Modric and a dominant midfield display.
The Super Eagles responded brilliantly in their second group game, however, with Ahmed Musa producing one of the greatest performances in Nigeria’s World Cup history. His superb brace secured a 2-0 victory over Iceland and revived the team’s hopes of qualification.
Since then, positive results against European nations have remained scarce. A 2-2 draw against Ukraine in September 2019 offered some encouragement, but Nigeria’s most recent encounter with European opposition ended in a painful 4-0 defeat to Portugal in November 2022.

A new chapter will now be written in Warsaw as Chelle continues to shape his evolving Super Eagles squad.
Nigeria arrive in Poland in high spirits after successfully defending the Unity Cup title with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Jamaica in London. The performance showcased several emerging talents while extending the encouraging start to Chelle’s tenure.
Poland, meanwhile, are also in a rebuilding phase as they seek to move forward following disappointment in their qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The match will be played at the 58,000-capacity PGE Narodowy Stadium, providing a major test for a Nigerian side eager to prove it can compete consistently against quality European opposition.
