Amobi Ezeaku resigns as NPFL Club Owners Association secretary amid uncertainty over Rangers future

Rangers General Manager Amobi Ezeaku says he will decide his future within 21 days, revealing family sacrifices, mental strain, and lucrative international opportunities influencing his decision.

A fresh development has emerged surrounding Rangers General Manager Amobi Ezeaku after the football administrator formally resigned from his position as Secretary of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Club Owners Association.

In an official statement dated June 8, 2026, Ezeaku announced that he had tendered his resignation from the role, bringing an end to his tenure with the body that represents club owners across the Nigerian top flight.

“Today, I formally tendered my resignation as Secretary of the Nigeria Premier Football League Club Owners Association,” Ezeaku stated.

The announcement comes just days after the Rangers chief revealed that he would need three weeks to decide whether he will remain at the Enugu-based club, citing family concerns, personal wellbeing and attractive international opportunities.

In his resignation notice, Ezeaku described serving the association as “a profound honour and privilege”, saying the role gave him the opportunity to work alongside club owners and administrators committed to the growth and sustainability of professional football in Nigeria.

He expressed gratitude to the association’s chairman, Dr Okey Kpalukwu, members of the executive committee and club owners for the confidence placed in him throughout his time in office.

According to Ezeaku, the association made significant contributions during his tenure by fostering collaboration among clubs and engaging in discussions aimed at advancing the NPFL.

“As I take this step, I do so with a deep sense of gratitude and fulfillment,” he wrote.

“Leadership is ultimately about service, and I am thankful for the opportunity to have served.”

Despite stepping away from the position, Ezeaku insisted his commitment to Nigerian football remains unchanged.

“My resignation does not diminish my commitment to Nigerian football,” he said.

“I remain passionate about the game and will continue to support initiatives that promote excellence, integrity, innovation and sustainable growth within our football ecosystem.”

The statement did not provide specific reasons for the resignation, nor did it indicate whether the move is connected to his ongoing deliberations over his future at Rangers.

However, the development is likely to intensify speculation about Ezeaku’s next career move after he recently disclosed that FIFA, CAF and other international football opportunities remain available to him.

During Rangers’ end-of-season briefing, Ezeaku revealed that FIFA is awaiting a response regarding a Senior Legal Counsel Litigation position based in Miami, while family considerations and the emotional demands of football administration have also influenced his thinking.

He also made it clear that he has no intention of working for another Nigerian club, regardless of financial incentives.

The latest resignation represents the first major official step taken by Ezeaku since publicly acknowledging that he is considering whether to continue his journey with Rangers.

For now, attention will remain focused on the next three weeks, when the Rangers General Manager is expected to make a definitive announcement on his future at the seven time Nigerian champions.

Whether the resignation from the NPFL Club Owners Association is a precursor to a bigger career move remains to be seen, but it adds another layer of intrigue to one of the most closely watched administrative stories in Nigerian football.
