Samuel Chukwueze has been handed a fresh opportunity to resurrect his AC Milan career after new head coach Ruben Amorim declared that the Super Eagles winger possesses qualities the Rossoneri need ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The Nigerian international returned to Milan this summer following the end of his loan spell at Fulham, where he scored three goals and provided four assists in 23 Premier League appearances.

Although the London club chose not to activate the €26 million option to make the move permanent, Chukwueze has reported for pre season determined to fight for his place at the San Siro.

His future had appeared uncertain amid speculation that Milan could offload the 26-year-old during the transfer window. However, Amorim has made it clear that every player will be given the chance to impress before any decisions are taken.

Speaking during his first pre-season press conference, the Portuguese coach highlighted Chukwueze’s ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations as an attribute his side cannot afford to overlook.

“There are some players who weren’t here last year. Chukwueze is staying with us; we need players who can play one on one,” Amorim said.

“Saelemaekers can play left or right; he likes to play one-on-one.”

The Milan boss stressed that pre-season would be used to assess both returning players and emerging youngsters before the club considers entering the transfer market.

“Cissè and Comotto will start with us. I don’t know what will happen. We’ll find new players who weren’t here last year. If they play well and absorb my ideas, then we’ll find a place for them.”

“Before looking outside, let’s look carefully inside.”

Amorim also acknowledged the financial realities facing the club, insisting recruitment would only follow a thorough assessment of the current squad.

“Then after the pre season we’ll decide, but always with an eye on the budget. We’ll evaluate the young players. Chukwueze has great qualities and gives us alternatives.”

The comments represent a significant boost for Chukwueze, who has publicly stated his desire to remain at Milan despite attracting interest from elsewhere, including Turkish side Trabzonspor.

Amorim also outlined the tactical profile he wants from his wide attackers while discussing United States international Christian Pulisic, emphasising the importance of players operating between the lines while retaining the ability to beat opponents in one on one situations a description that closely matches Chukwueze’s strengths.

The Nigerian will now have the opportunity to convince the new manager during Milan’s pre season programme, which begins with a friendly against Celtic at Parkhead on July 25 before the Rossoneri embark on their tour of Australia and Indonesia.

Milan will conclude their preparations with a glamour fixture against Manchester United in Wrocław shortly before the start of the new Serie A season, with Chukwueze hoping to use the tour to establish himself as part of Amorim’s long-term plans.
