CAS dismisses viral AFCON final verdict claims, says Senegal-Morocco case still ongoing

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed reports claiming it has already ruled in Senegal’s favour over the disputed 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, confirming that the case remains ongoing.

The clarification follows the circulation of a document on social media purporting to be an official CAS award that reinstated Senegal as African champions after CAF had previously overturned the result of the controversial final.

However, an email attributed to CAS Communication Officer Vanessa Tracey states that no such decision has been issued.

According to the correspondence, CAS said:

“We are aware of the false information circulating regarding the proceedings: TAS 2026/A/12295 Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) v. Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) & Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF).”

The statement added:

“No official decision has been rendered to date and the procedure is still ongoing.”

CAS also urged the public to rely only on its official communication channels for updates on the high profile case.

“We recommend consulting only the CAS website as the official source of communication.”

The clarification effectively dismisses the viral document that claimed CAS had accepted Senegal’s appeal, set aside CAF’s earlier ruling and restored the Lions of Teranga as winners of the 2025 AFCON.

The dispute stems from one of the most controversial finals in the tournament’s history.

Senegal had initially won the match on the pitch after extra time following a dramatic encounter with Morocco. However, the game was overshadowed by chaos after Senegal temporarily walked off the field in protest over a late penalty awarded to Morocco.

CAF later ruled that the walk off constituted a breach of its regulations, overturned the match result and awarded the title to Morocco.

The Senegalese Football Federation subsequently lodged an appeal with CAS, arguing that CAF’s decision should be annulled and the original result restored.

The case remains one of the most closely watched legal battles in African football, with the final outcome expected to have significant implications for both federations.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has denied reports claiming it has ruled in Senegal's favour over the disputed 2025 AFCON final, confirming the case remains ongoing.

CAS has made its position clear: no final verdict has been delivered, and any claims suggesting Senegal has already been reinstated as 2025 African champions are false until an official ruling is issued.
