Premier League legend emerges as leading contender for Senegal job after Pape Thiaw exit

Patrick Vieira has emerged as the leading contender to become Senegal's next head coach following Pape Thiaw's dismissal after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Senegal have reportedly identified Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira as the leading candidate to become the country’s next head coach following the dismissal of Pape Thiaw in the aftermath of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to L’Équipe, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has already begun work on appointing a new manager to lead the Teranga Lions into a new era, with Vieira emerging as one of the federation’s preferred options.

The search for a successor gathered pace after the FSF parted company with Thiaw and his entire technical staff on Sunday following what it described as a comprehensive review of the national team’s performances and future direction.

Thiaw’s departure came after a turbulent spell in charge that culminated in Senegal’s dramatic World Cup exit to Belgium. Although the Teranga Lions reached the Round of 32, they squandered a two goal advantage before losing 3-2 after extra time, a result that proved to be the final blow after months of mounting pressure.

His tenure had also been overshadowed by the controversial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, a prolonged contract dispute with the federation, and public unrest within the squad after midfielder Pape Gueye announced he would suspend his international career while the coaching staff remained in place.

Preparations are already shifting towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the federation is now believed to be prioritising a coach with proven experience at the highest level.

Vieira fits much of that profile. the former France captain enjoyed one of the most decorated playing careers of his generation, winning the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000 before establishing himself as an Arsenal legend. He lifted three Premier League titles and four FA Cups with the North London club, captaining the Gunners during one of the most successful periods in their history.

Since retiring, the 50-year-old has built an extensive coaching résumé across Europe and the United States. After beginning in Manchester City’s academy, he managed New York City FC in Major League Soccer before taking charge of Nice, Crystal Palace and most recently Strasbourg.

Although Vieira has never coached a senior national team, he is widely regarded for his tactical understanding, leadership qualities and ability to nurture young talent.

Should the appointment materialise, Vieira would become the first Frenchman to coach Senegal since Alain Giresse, while inheriting one of Africa’s most talented squads at a pivotal moment.
