Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 20-year Argentina career that delivered the game’s biggest prize and transformed the story of one of football’s most celebrated players.
The 39-year-old confirmed his decision in an Instagram post on Monday, saying the time had come to step away from the national team after more than two decades of representing Argentina.
“After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the National Team.
“It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts deep down – but I understand that the time has come.”
Messi’s decision comes after he captained Argentina to the 2026 World Cup final, their second consecutive appearance in the tournament’s title match.
Spain ultimately won the 2026 final, but Messi had already secured his place in Argentina’s football history four years earlier when he finally lifted the World Cup in Qatar.
That triumph ended years of frustration on the international stage and completed one of the defining chapters of his career.
Messi made his Argentina senior debut in 2005 and went on to become the country’s most-capped player, with 207 appearances, as well as its all-time leading goalscorer with 125 goals.

His international honours also include the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 Finalissima victory over Italy.
But the journey to those triumphs was anything but straightforward. for years, Messi endured relentless scrutiny whenever Argentina fell short, particularly after defeats in major finals.
His international career was repeatedly defined by questions about whether his extraordinary club success could be matched in an Argentina shirt.
That narrative changed dramatically in the final phase of his career.
The Copa America triumph in 2021 ended Argentina’s long wait for a major international trophy, before victory over Italy in the Finalissima a year later added another title.
Then came Qatar, Messi scored twice in the 2022 World Cup final against France and converted his penalty in the shootout as Argentina became world champions for the first time since 1986.
He then led Argentina to another World Cup final in 2026, reinforcing his extraordinary longevity at the highest level of international football.
Now, however, Messi believes the chapter has reached its natural conclusion.
“I swear to you that I always gave it my all – not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too.
“I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.”

Messi also acknowledged that his time with Argentina was coming to an end and pointed towards the younger generation waiting to take over.
“Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply. I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the National Team.
“I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some great young players coming up who deserve to be here.”
His relationship with Argentina has evolved dramatically across the years, moving from unbearable expectation to national hero status.
The player once criticised for failing to reproduce his Barcelona brilliance with the national team leaves having delivered the trophies supporters wanted most.
His decision also follows a difficult personal period. Earlier this month, Messi had raised serious doubts about his wider footballing future while paying tribute to his father, Jorge Messi, who died earlier in August.

Whether this represents the end of Messi’s playing career altogether remains a separate question. What is now clear is that his time wearing the Argentina shirt is over.
And after 207 appearances, 125 goals, multiple Copa America triumphs and the World Cup he spent so much of his career chasing, Messi leaves international football with little left to prove.
