The final preparations are nearing completion for Team Nigeria’s next international assignment, with the country’s young athletes set to travel to Senegal for an event that will mark a historic first for the Olympic movement.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that the Nigerian contingent will depart Abuja on October 29 for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, scheduled to run from October 31 to November 13.
The Games will be the first Olympic sporting event hosted on African soil, placing Dakar and its neighbouring host zones of Diamniadio and Saly at the centre of a landmark moment for the continent’s sport.
For Nigeria, the immediate task is to ensure that its athletes and officials arrive ready to compete, with the final phase of preparations now giving way to travel and competition arrangements.
Team Nigeria’s departure will bring a 21-day local camping programme to an end. The camp began on October 9 and has covered several aspects of preparation, according to the NSC’s operational timeline.
These include medical screening, anti-doping education, technical and tactical sessions, kit fitting, travel documentation and confirmation of participation requirements.

The contingent is expected to arrive in Dakar on October 30, a day before the opening ceremony. Accreditation, accommodation arrangements, equipment checks, technical meetings and familiarization with competition venues are scheduled ahead of the start of the Games.
The NSC said its operational plan was designed to coordinate preparations, travel and competition schedules while ensuring athletes and officials were adequately prepared.
Six sports will carry Nigeria’s hopes
Nigeria will compete in six sports: athletics, boxing, road cycling, swimming, table tennis and beach volleyball.
Table tennis and beach volleyball are scheduled to begin on October 31, the same day the Games open at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium. Swimming follows on November 1, while boxing is scheduled for November 7 to 12.
Athletics and road cycling will take place on selected dates between November 8 and 10.
The competitions will be spread across venues in the host zones. Beach volleyball will be staged at Saly Beach West, table tennis and boxing at Dakar Expo Centre, and swimming at the Tour de l’Œuf Complex.
Road cycling is scheduled along Corniche Ouest, while athletics will take place at the Iba Mar Diop Complex.
The varied schedule means the Nigerian delegation’s preparations must extend beyond the athletes’ individual events to include coordination across different venues and competition dates.
More than another international competition
Dakar 2026 carries significance beyond the medals on offer. By hosting the Youth Olympic Games, Africa will stage an Olympic sporting event for the first time, creating a major platform for young athletes from across the world.
Nigeria’s participation also aligns with efforts to strengthen grassroots sports development, nurture emerging talent and build pathways towards elite international competition.
The closing ceremony is scheduled for November 13 at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium. The Nigerian contingent is expected to return to Abuja after completing departure formalities and equipment reconciliation.

Before then, the focus will shift from the training camp at home to the competition venues in Senegal. Team Nigeria’s departure on October 29 will mark the beginning of that transition, as the country’s young athletes prepare to test themselves on a stage of historic importance.
