Bournemouth blow Manchester United apart at Old Trafford as Michael Carrick face fresh questions

Manchester United’s latest Old Trafford setback has intensified scrutiny on Michael Carrick, with one team selection and a familiar opponent adding to the unease.

Manchester United’s troubles deepened at Old Trafford as Bournemouth claimed a 3-0 victory in the Premier League, leaving Michael Carrick facing renewed scrutiny after another damaging home performance.

Rayan opened the scoring from a Justin Kluivert free kick before Marcus Tavernier capitalised on a costly defensive mistake to double Bournemouth’s advantage. Evanilson then punished United again in the second half, completing a miserable afternoon for the hosts and extending Bournemouth’s unbeaten Premier League run against them to seven matches.

The defeat was United’s third in four home matches, adding to the pressure on Carrick after a heavy midweek loss to Como. With reports suggesting that potential replacements were being considered, the manager needed a response from his players. Instead, United produced another performance marked by defensive uncertainty and missed opportunities.

Carrick’s decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench was one of the biggest talking points before kickoff. But the absence of United’s influential midfielder was only part of a difficult afternoon in which Bournemouth repeatedly found ways through their opponents.

Bournemouth looked capable of troubling United from the opening minutes. Rayan missed a promising opportunity in the fifth minute, heading narrowly wide after finding space inside the penalty area from a corner.

United initially enjoyed spells of possession, moving the ball through midfield and attempting to establish control. However, their possession produced little attacking threat, while Bournemouth looked increasingly comfortable on the ball.

Tavernier tested Senne Lammens with an effort from the edge of the area in the 18th minute, and United struggled to turn their spells of possession into clear chances.

The visitors eventually found the breakthrough in the 38th minute. Ayden Heaven was booked for a foul that gave Bournemouth a freekick, and Kluivert delivered into the penalty area. Rayan found space at the far post and finished with a cushioned volley into the bottom left corner.

It was a warning United failed to heed. Bournemouth had threatened from set pieces earlier, and the goal exposed the consequences of allowing a dangerous attacker too much room inside the box.

United briefly threatened to respond. Bryan Mbeumo found space inside the area in the 41st minute, but Djordje Petrovic produced an excellent save to keep Bournemouth ahead. two minutes later, the visitors struck again.

A defensive error makes United’s task harder

United’s second goal conceded came from a mistake that turned a manageable deficit into a more serious problem.

Leny Yoro lost control of the situation under pressure, allowing Bournemouth to take advantage. Adrien Truffert supplied the ball for Tavernier, who finished from close range to make it 2-0 in the 43rd minute.

The goal left United with a mountain to climb before half time. Harry Maguire was booked in stoppage time, while Carlos Baleba came close to reducing the deficit with a shot from the edge of the box that sailed just over the crossbar.

The half time whistle was met with boos from the home crowd. United had struggled to create clear chances, and Bournemouth had punished their defensive lapses with clinical efficiency.

The interval offered an opportunity to change the momentum. Carrick’s first decision, however, did little to quieten the questions surrounding Fernandes’ absence.

Matheus Cunha replaced Youri Tielemans at half time, but Fernandes remained among the substitutes as United sought a route back into the contest.

Within two minutes of the restart, Bournemouth appeared to have scored a third. Evanilson found the net, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

The reprieve did not bring United any lasting relief. Rayan continued to threaten, forcing Lammens into a strong save in the 50th minute after collecting a loose pass inside the box.

United had chances of their own. Cunha wasted an opportunity in the 58th minute, shooting well wide after receiving a low pass, while Mbeumo sent an effort over the crossbar three minutes later.

Those missed opportunities mattered because Bournemouth remained dangerous whenever United lost their defensive shape.

Rayan came close again in the 67th minute, cutting through the home defence before sending his shot narrowly wide. Four minutes later, Bournemouth delivered the decisive blow.

Lewis Cook played a straight ball forward, and United’s defenders failed to deal with the danger. Evanilson collected the opportunity, advanced towards goal and finished past Lammens from an acute angle to make it 3-0.

The goal underlined the gap between the teams on the afternoon: Bournemouth were decisive when opportunities appeared, while United’s defensive organisation repeatedly broke down.

United attempted to respond with substitutions, including Lisandro Martínez replacing Ayden Heaven and Joshua Zirkzee coming on for Baleba. Shea Lacey was also introduced for Amad Diallo.

But Bournemouth were increasingly comfortable protecting their advantage. The visitors made changes of their own, with Ben Gannon-Doak, Ryan Christie, Amine Adli, Eli Junior Kroupi and Bafodé Diakité among those brought on during the second half.

United continued to push forward, but their attacks lacked the precision required to threaten a comeback. Leny Yoro headed over from a promising position in the 86th minute, summing up a frustrating afternoon in front of goal.

Bournemouth saw out the remaining minutes without conceding, and the final whistle confirmed another emphatic win at Old Trafford.

Bournemouth’s Old Trafford record becomes increasingly striking

The result extended Bournemouth’s unbeaten Premier League run against Manchester United to seven matches, a sequence featuring three 3-0 victories at Old Trafford.

It also gave Bournemouth a fourth consecutive win in all competitions, their best such run since December 2023, according to the supplied match statistics.

United, meanwhile, had conceded seven goals across their two latest matches against Como and Bournemouth. Their problems were not confined to one isolated defensive error: Bournemouth repeatedly found space, created dangerous openings and made United pay when chances arrived.

The league table offered little comfort. After eight Premier League matches, United remained 16th with seven points, having recorded one win and four draws. Bournemouth moved to ninth points in the supplied standings, sitting 13th.

The manager had promised that United would be a different team against Bournemouth and insisted before the match that he had complete trust in his players. The result, however, provided little evidence of the improvement he had called for.

His decision to leave Fernandes out of the starting line-up will inevitably attract attention, particularly because United struggled to create enough clear chances while trailing.

Carrick described the decision as a “pure football decision” before kickoff, and Fernandes remained on the bench despite the team’s need for inspiration.

Whether that selection becomes a defining talking point or is overshadowed by United’s broader failings will depend on the response in the coming weeks.
