Michael Carrick has refused to speculate about his future at Manchester United after the club’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth intensified scrutiny of his position.
Asked whether he expected to be sacked that night or the following day, Carrick said he was not anticipating any particular decision and would continue working as normal.
“I totally understand the situation. I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I’m carrying on as normal,” he said.
The response came after another disappointing afternoon at Old Trafford, where Bournemouth scored through Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson to leave United with more questions about their performances and direction.
Carrick acknowledged the circumstances surrounding the club and accepted that United had fallen short in recent matches.
“I love this place, I always do what I feel is going to be the best for the football club, whatever decision is made on anything really,” he said.
“That’s kind of it. I’m not expecting anything overall.”
The manager’s comments offered no indication that he had been told his position was under immediate threat. Instead, he stressed his commitment to the club while recognising the results and performances that have fuelled the uncertainty.
“But the situation is where we are, and we haven’t had results and we haven’t had performances that have been good enough,” Carrick said.
His admission followed a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth that extended United’s difficult run and increased the pressure surrounding the team’s next steps.

Carrick also addressed the emotions surrounding the aftermath of the match, making clear that his words should not be interpreted as a farewell.
“It was not a farewell from me. I was really mixed emotions. I’m feeling it for the players,” he said.
“But I certainly appreciate the support.”
The remarks suggested that Carrick was conscious of the disappointment affecting the squad and those supporting the club. However, he did not indicate that he was preparing to leave, nor did he offer any confirmation about what the club might decide.
His immediate message was that he would continue in his role while accepting that the situation was difficult.

The defeat itself provided the backdrop to the questions over Carrick’s future.
Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute, meeting Justin Kluivert’s freekick at the far post. Tavernier doubled Bournemouth’s lead five minutes later after a defensive error, leaving United two goals behind at half-time.
Evanilson then made it 3-0 in the 71st minute, exploiting further uncertainty in the home defence to complete Bournemouth’s emphatic win.
Carrick had also left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench, a decision that attracted attention as United struggled to find a way back into the contest.
The result left United 16th in the Premier League standings with seven points from eight matches, according to the supplied figures. Bournemouth moved to 13th with nine points.
Focus shifts to feisty trip to Chelsea
United’s next assignment is a trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on October 31, giving Carrick and his players little time to reflect before another demanding fixture.
The manager had insisted before the Bournemouth match that he trusted his players and expected a different performance. The 3-0 defeat, however, failed to deliver the response he had called for.
In the meantime, Carrick says he will carry on as normal. His acknowledgment that United’s results and performances have not been good enough makes clear that he understands the pressure, but his comments leave the club’s next decision unresolved.
Whether he remains in charge for the Chelsea match is not confirmed by his remarks. What is clear is that United must find a response on the pitch while uncertainty continues to surround their manager.
