Bendel Insurance brought Rivers United’s nine-match unbeaten start to the Euromatch-NPFL season to an end with a 2-1 victory in Benin City, while Ikorodu City fought back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Shooting Stars in the standout Southwest derby of Matchday 10.
The results delivered a significant setback for the league leaders, offered fresh encouragement to the chasing pack and provided a reminder of the unpredictability of the Nigerian topflight, with several teams still separated by only a handful of points.
Rivers had arrived at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium looking to preserve their unbeaten record and strengthen their position at the summit. Instead, Bendel Insurance claimed a vital home victory, ending a run that had lasted nine league matches and giving their own campaign an important lift.
The defeat does not immediately remove Rivers from the title conversation, but it opens the door for their rivals to close the gap as the competition moves towards Matchday 11.

Bendel Insurance 2-1 win was about more than three points. It was an opportunity to halt Rivers’ momentum and demonstrate their ability to compete against one of the strongest sides in the early stages of the campaign.
Rivers had been among the league’s most consistent teams, combining an unbeaten record with a strong defensive return. Their trip to Benin City, however, ended in defeat as the hosts took advantage of their opportunity to secure a result with consequences at the top of the table.
The victory also strengthens Bendel’s position in a crowded group of contenders. With several clubs clustered around the leading places, every win carries added significance, particularly against a direct rival.
Rivers will now have to respond to their first league defeat of the season and ensure that the setback does not become the beginning of a more difficult run.
Ikorodu rescue a point in the Southwest derby
While Bendel celebrated in Benin City, Ikorodu City produced one of the day’s most notable comebacks in Lagos, recovering from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 with Shooting Stars at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
The result denied Shooting Stars a victory that would have strengthened their efforts to build on their previous Matchday 9 success against Ranchers Bees. Instead, the visitors had to settle for a point after Ikorodu fought their way back into the contest.
The comeback offered some consolation after their previous defeat to Niger Tornadoes. Ikorodu had entered the derby seeking to make home advantage count, having built a strong record on their own ground earlier in the season.
The draw is also a reflection of the stakes surrounding the fixture. Beyond the regional rivalry, both teams needed a result to improve their positions and establish greater consistency in a tightly packed middle section of the table.
Neither side claimed bragging rights, but Ikorodu’s recovery ensured they left the contest with a point after appearing in danger of suffering another defeat.
Nasarawa maintain their momentum as Enyimba stumble again
Nasarawa United continued their strong run with a 1-0 victory over Enyimba, courtesy of Jofrank Joshua’s 23rd-minute goal.
The win marked Nasarawa’s fourth victory in five matches, underlining their growing momentum as they remain involved in the contest near the top of the standings.
The defeat is yet another frustrating result for Enyimba in a campaign that has yet to find sustained consistency. The former African champions have struggled to put together a reliable sequence of performances, and their trip to Nasarawa offered no immediate relief.
Nasarawa, meanwhile, will take confidence from another clean-sheet victory and the opportunity to remain among the leading contenders as the season progresses.
Niger Tornadoes claim an important away win
Niger Tornadoes were among the day’s other winners, securing a 1-0 victory away to Abia Warriors.
The result gave the visitors three valuable points on the road and added to a competitive Matchday 10 programme in which home advantage proved decisive in some fixtures but not all.
The defeat was a missed opportunity for the Warriors, to improve their position in the lower half of the table. For Niger Tornadoes, the away success offered another boost as they seek to remain within reach of the leading group.
Kun Khalifat also claimed three points at home, defeating Inter Lagos 1-0. The result was important for a side looking to build a more consistent campaign, while Inter’s difficult season continued at the foot of the standings.
Three matches end level
Elsewhere, Katsina United and Plateau United shared four goals in a 2-2 draw, with the hosts rescuing a point through a late injury time equalizer.
The late goal denied Plateau United the full reward for their trip to Katsina and ensured the home side avoided defeat in a contest that remained alive until the closing stages.
Barau FC and Kwara United also finished 1-1, leaving both teams with a point from their encounter. The result extended Kwara’s search for a breakthrough away from home, having entered the match without an away point or goal in the league campaign.
Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars played out a goalless draw in another fixture that produced no winner. The point kept both teams moving, although neither was able to make a decisive leap in the crowded standings.
Postponements leave the table incomplete
Ranchers Bees’ scheduled meeting with Doma United was postponed because the venue was unavailable. The rearranged fixture will leave both clubs with a game in hand until it is played.
Enugu Rangers were also absent from Matchday 10 action because of their continental commitments. The Flying Antelopes travelled to Algeria for the second leg of their CAF Champions League qualifying tie against MC Alger, where they suffered a defeat.
Rangers therefore have two league matches outstanding, leaving their position in the table subject to change when those fixtures are completed.

The race remains tightly contested
Matchday 10 has added another twist to the early Euromatch-NPFL campaign. Rivers United have lost their unbeaten record, Nasarawa United are building momentum, and Bendel Insurance have secured a statement victory that could prove important in the race for the leading positions.
The 2-2 Southwest derby draw offered its own storyline, with Ikorodu City showing resilience to recover from two goals down against Shooting Stars. Meanwhile, Niger Tornadoes earned a valuable away win, and Enyimba were left searching for answers after another defeat.
