Ademola Lookman says switching international allegiance from England to Nigeria was one of the best decisions of his career, after being named 2024 CAF African Player of the Year.
The Atalanta forward, who helped his club to 2023/2024 UEFA Europa League glory with a historic hat-trick in the final, was honoured for his outstanding performances at club and international level.
“Without doubt. It changed my career and my life. People know that. This is my home, this is my place—Nigeria. I am the son of the soil,” Lookman said in an interview with ARISE News.

The 26-year-old began his international journey with England’s youth teams, but made his senior debut for Nigeria in 2022 after receiving FIFA clearance. Since then, he has become a key figure in the Super Eagles setup.
“It’s amazing. Honestly, I won’t lie to you—it’s a privilege to have it,” he said of the CAF award. “I’ve seen the great players who have received this award. To now be counted among them is truly a blessing.”

Lookman reflected on his career path, attributing his success to self-belief and consistent hard work.
“I think if you work hard every single day, you gain confidence and grow in what you do,” he said. “Every single day I try to be better—whether that’s on or off the field.”
The Lagos-born winger also spoke emotionally about returning to his roots with the award.
“I’m bringing it back home to Lagos. I spent a lot of time in Phase 2 as a kid, it’s a privilege to present it to the President,” he said.

“Retiring now? Being content? That’s not in my mind. There’s still so much more to achieve. This is just another part of the journey.”
Lookman becomes the latest Nigerian to be named African Footballer of the Year, following in the footsteps of legends like Victor Ikepba, Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike, Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Osimhen, who claimed the award in 2023.
