Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has defended his tactical decisions at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting Nigeria remain fully focused on completing a clean sweep of Group C as they prepare to face Uganda in their final group match.
Nigeria have already secured qualification for the round of 16 after back-to-back victories, opening their campaign with a 2-1 win over Tanzania before claiming a dramatic 3-2 success against Tunisia. Those results placed the Super Eagles top of the group with six points.
However, Chelle’s approach during the closing stages of the Tunisia match has come under scrutiny, following the Carthage Eagles late comeback from 3-0 down.

The Nigerian coach rejected suggestions that his substitutions weakened the team, explaining that Tunisia’s first goal came before any changes were made.
“We conceded the first goal before the substitution,” Chelle said. “We played in a 4-4-2 diamond, which gives freedom to the fullbacks. The pressure was on us, so you have to protect the wingers.”
Looking ahead to the Uganda fixture, Chelle indicated that rotation could be considered but stressed that maintaining intensity and winning mentality remains the priority as Nigeria target maximum points in the group.

“There are players in this group that deserve to be in this team for this game and the other games, to win something, it’s not just about 11 players, it’s about the group.”

The coach also acknowledged the importance of defensive discipline but pointed to Nigeria’s attacking output as a key positive at the tournament.
“You want a clean sheet, but I see the goals we score,or sure we want to win, and I have to look for the best way for my team” he said.
