Ghana to host 2027 U-20 AFCON as tournament returns to West Africa

Ghana will stage the 2027 U-20 AFCON for the first time since 1999, as CAF brings the youth tournament back to West Africa.

Nearly three decades after last staging the competition, Ghana is set to once again welcome Africa’s brightest young footballers after being named host of the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The decision by the Confederation of African Football signals more than just a hosting right it repositions West Africa at the center of youth football on the continent, with Ghana’s rich developmental pedigree once again in focus.

It will be the first time since 1999 that the country hosts the tournament, a gap that reflects both the evolution of the competition and CAF’s wider rotation of venues across regions.

While the countdown to 2027 begins, scheduling details for the tournament are still to be confirmed. This comes in a year already packed with continental football, as the senior Africa Cup of Nations is due to take place in East Africa during June and July.

Attention, for now, remains on the most recent edition. In 2025, South Africa emerged champions for the first time, edging Morocco 1-0 in a tightly fought final at the June 30 Stadium.

The decisive moment came midway through the second half, when Gomolemo Kekana struck from distance, bending a precise effort into the top corner to settle the contest.

That victory carried added weight, marking South Africa’s first ever triumph over North African opposition in the competition and highlighting a gradual shift in the balance of youth football power across the continent.

Historically, however, Nigeria remains the dominant force, with a record seven titles that continue to define the tournament’s benchmark for success.

In recent years, CAF has expanded the competition to a 12-team format, a move aimed at deepening competition and creating broader pathways for emerging talent. It is a structure that is expected to remain in place when Ghana takes centre stage in 2027.
