Governor Diri sacks Bayelsa United board and coaches after relegation

The fallout from Bayelsa United’s relegation has begun, with Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri dissolving the club’s board and coaching crew following what he described as unsatisfactory performances.

The decision was announced on Wednesday in Yenagoa ahead of a meeting of the State Executive Council, marking a significant restructuring move at the club after a disappointing campaign that ended with relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Governor Diri expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s recent results and said decisive action was required to restore the fortunes of the state owned side, popularly known as the Prosperity Boys.

The governor explained that the dissolution of both the board and technical crew forms part of a broader plan to reposition the club and lay the foundation for a swift return to the top flight.

As part of the restructuring process, an interim management committee will be established to oversee the affairs of the club.

The committee will be responsible for stabilising operations, rebuilding the squad structure and preparing Bayelsa United for a promotion push in the coming season.

Bayelsa United’s relegation brought an end to a four-year stay in the NPFL. The Yenagoa based club saw their fate sealed after a 2-1 defeat away to Remo Stars in the penultimate round of the season.

Despite taking an early lead through Ofem Nneoyi, Bayelsa United were unable to hold on as goals from Alex Oyowah and Victor Mbaoma completed a comeback victory for the hosts and confirmed the club’s drop to the second tier.
