Oliseh backs Chelle despite Super Eagles World Cup failure

Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has thrown his support behind head coach Eric Chelle, insisting the Malian has proven his value despite Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria fell short after a dramatic playoff defeat to DR Congo, losing 4–3 on penalties following a 1–1 draw after extra time. The result ended the Super Eagles’ hopes of making a return to the global finals and triggered widespread debate over Chelle’s future.

But Oliseh, speaking on his podcast, said the coach has impressed him.

“I am one of those, in reality, was totally unhappy when he was appointed, but I must be honest with you that so far, he has won me over,” the former midfielder said.

“I feel like the man has really given it a lot, he’s done a lot, and he’s picked up some points, better than any of the two people that preceded him.”

Nigeria endured a turbulent start to the qualifiers, failing to win any of their opening four matches and slipping behind early in the group. Chelle gradually steadied the squad, leading the team on a long unbeaten stretch and pushing them through to the final playoff round.

Although the World Cup campaign ended in heartbreak, Oliseh believes Chelle has restored clarity and competitiveness to the side, praising his organisation and approach in recent months.
