Oriental derby drama as Rangers centre-backs flip script against Enyimba

Rangers International came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Enyimba in a tense Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 35 Oriental derby at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.

After a cautious opening, Rangers began to assert control, with Ikechukwu Mgbemena testing goalkeeper Kelvin Ogunga from long range.

The visitors were forced onto the back foot as Oputa Chibueze’s dangerous deliveries and Waheed Adebayo’s effort from outside the box highlighted the home side’s growing momentum.

Despite the pressure, clear chances were scarce. Adebayo spurned a gilt-edged opportunity after weaving through Enyimba’s defence, while Williams Wonah nearly punished Rangers with a surging run, only to be denied at close range.

The breakthrough came after the interval, but against the run of play. Wonah struck from distance to give Enyimba the lead with their first shot on target, marking the first time Rangers had conceded first at home this season.

Rangers responded quickly. Chidozie Iwundu, who had earlier rattled the post with a free-kick, equalised in the 61st minute, firing home after Enyimba failed to clear their lines. It was the defender’s ninth goal of the campaign.

The comeback was completed when substitute Igwilo Chimobi delivered a cross that was met by Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, who headed home to cap sustained second-half pressure.

Adebayo missed a late chance to extend the lead, but it did not prove costly as Rangers held on to end a three-game winless run.

The result lifts them to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League table on 59 points.
